Lung Cancer Myths Vs. Facts:
Do You Know the Truth?

Myth: Lung cancer can't be detected until it is too late - a lung cancer diagnosis has to be a death sentence.
Fact: There are new methods of early detection which can detect lung cancer while it is still in Stage 1, greatly increasing cure and survival rates. Ask your doctor about diagnostic options such as s spiral CT scan. And there are many new treatments to help those who are diagnosed at a later stage.

Myth: The biggest cancer killers in New York are breast cancer and prostate cancer.
Fact: Lung cancer kills more New Yorkers each year than any other cancer. According to the New York State Department of Health, each year about 13,000 New Yorkers are diagnosed with lung cancer and about 9,400 men and women in New York State die of this disease, making it the number one cancer killer for both men and women in New York.

Myth: Only people who currently are smoking are at risk for lung cancer. If you've never smoked or you've quit, you won't get the disease.
Fact: 50% of people newly diagnosed with lung cancer are former smokers and 14% have never smoked.
