More Americans die each year from lung cancer than from breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers combined. Lung cancer kills more men annually than prostate cancer and more women than breast cancer. According the CDC’s most recent statistics, in 2007, 203,536 people in the United States were diagnosed with lung cancer, and 158,683 Americans died from the disease.

Lung cancer research receives far less funding per death than any other cancer. In 2006, the National Cancer Institute estimated it spent:

$1,630
per lung cancer death
an increase of only $697 per death since 2000
$13,452
per breast cancer death
an increase of $4,562 per death since 2000

$11,298

per prostate cancer death
an increase of $7,631 per death since 2000
$4,566
per colon cancer death
an increase of $1,374 per death since 2000
